I spent the day reading the page proofs of The Bear.
This is the second set of pages I’ve proofed. The first was for the UK & Commonwealth edition, which will be published at the same time as the US and Canadian editions by Harvill Secker in February 2014.
I always go into reading page proofs feeling nervous. What will I find? I don’t mean in the way of mistakes. I mean that it could be much worse. What if I’m bored by what I wrote?
I really believe that if your book is going to work for someone else, it has to work for you. And it has to work more than once.
It’s a good sign, then, that I spent my day laughing and crying. Hopefully someone else out there will too.
