While I did not walk away with the 2017 Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, I did have a great night at the ceremony. They made videos about each of the short-listed books.

But the real thrill of this nomination was to be in such incredible company. I was deeply honoured to find The Last Neanderthal among these books.

Carleigh Baker on her brilliant collection, Bad Endings.
Leanne Beasamosake Simpson on This Accident of Being Lost, which bursts with energy.
And last and in no way least, is Omar El Akkad on American War. It still haunts me.
